The retired police official arrested on charges of dereliction of duty during the 2002 post-Godhra riots at Dipda Darwaja, was on Tuesday sent to police custody for two days by a local court in Visnagar here.

M K Patel, arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) yesterday, was produced before Judicial Magistrate R S Rajput in Visnagar, who remanded him in police custody for two days.

Dipda Dawaja, where 11 people were burnt to death in a house during the 2002 riot in Visngar town, came under the jurisdiction of Patel who was posted as an inspector then.

According to an SIT investigating officer in the Dipda Darwaja case, Patel had delayed arrests of the accused even after the witness had named them in the FIR filed in 2002.

He is the second police officer to be arrested by the apex court appointed SIT, which is investigating some of the gruesome riot cases.

The SIT had earlier arrested DySP K G Erda, who was the PI of area under which the Gulburg society falls. Around 38 people including ex-MP Eshan Jafri were killed in the Gulburg society riot case.
