Police fired in the air after lathicharge and tear gas failed to disperse clashing groups of students during a students union election at Subarnarekha college in Gopiballavpur in West Midnapore district on Saturday.

Four policemen and five students belonging to 'Chatra Aikya', a students union neutral to any political party, were injured in brickbatting by students belonging to rival unions of SFI when the police tried to break up a demonstration, district police superintendent R Rajasekhara said.

As tension prevailed in the college campus and surrounding areas, a police picket has been set up.
