Local intelligence has helped the Nehru Nagar police identify at least six men from the Vatsalatai Nagar slum as suspects in the serial rape and murder cases involving three minor girls from the area.
Police sources participating in the investigation said these suspects were zeroed in because they have records of sexually assaulting minor girls. Sources add that though the suspects have been involved in the crime in the past they may not have made it to police records because such cases usually do not get reported.
Policemen in plain clothes are following these suspects. Close circuit television cameras have been installed near their homes so that their body language and moments can be monitored round the clock. A few residents of the area have also been roped in secretly to assist the police.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Trombay divison) J. Khandagle said he could not reveal details about the investigation. “We are taking help from anyone and everyone who can lead us to the accused,” Khandagle said.
According to senior police officials more than 800 police personnel are working on the case. Most police personnel, who have worked in the Nehru Nagar in the recent past, have been brought back on deputation and a number of them are roaming the area in plain clothes to gather intelligence.
“Our bosses have given us a free hand to do whatever we want in order to nab the culprit,” said a police officer, who has been brought to Nehru Nagar police station from a posting in the western suburbs.
