A police officer was held for allegedly molesting a 13-year-old girl in south Kashmir, while another cop was beaten up in Srinagar for a similar bid.

According to Srinagar-based spokesman, the cop, Ejaz Ahmad Shah, a resident of Kulgam, was arrested after some locals accused him of attempting to molest a girl at Dessu, Kokernag, 60 km south of Srinagar.

"A case under sections 343, 354, 323 of the Ranbir Penal Code (for outraging modesty and illegal confinement) has been lodged against him. The accused works with the police department and was on a personal visit to the place," said the spokesman.

Sources said the cop is of inspector rank officer. He was handed over to the police by the locals who had assembled near the spot after hearing alarms of the girl on Tuesday evening.

The incident fueled tension in the area with dozens of locals on Wednesday morning staging protests. They were demanding action against the police officer.

The incident took place at the house of the victim, whose father is a friend of the police officer. The father was out when the officer tried to molest the girl.

In a separate incident, a CRPF jawan, identified as Nirmal Sharma, was handed over to the police after he was caught misbehaving with a female co-passenger in a bus.

Passengers and locals beat up the jawan after the victim raised an alarm in the Gojwara area. The jawan had boarded the bus at Lal Chowk, 3 km away from the spot of incident.

An FIR has been filed in the incident.
