Three children, aged between 13 and 15 years, were rescued from Unnao town in Uttar Pradesh after their mother allegedly struck a deal to sell them off, police said on Thursday.

The police rescued the children — two boys and a girl — on Wednesday shortly before the mother was about to hand them over to a man with whom she had struck the deal.

"The mother had earlier taken the children to Jaipur and took money in return of them, but escaped without physically delivering them. She adopted the same method in Delhi and Meerut too," said SSP Raghubir Lal.

"When she tried trading her children for money in Unnao, police arrived on the spot and rescued them but the mother managed to escape," Lal said.

The children were handed over to their father Nasimuddin who was jailed seven months ago in a criminal case and was released from prison last month, the SSP said.

"The search is on for the absconding mother," said SSP Lal.
