Police repulsed a pre-dawn attack by terrorists on a police station in Poonch district, where one Lashker-e-Toiba terrorist was killed in a fierce gunbattle with security forces and arms and ammunitions recovered from him, officials said.

Terrorists attacked the Gursai police station in Mendhar Tehsil of Poonch district and opened heavy fire, they said.

However, the alert troops returned fire resulting in a gunfight lasting over an hour, they said.

Terrorists later fled the spot. There was no casualty. This is the second time that this police station has come under terrorist attack.

Based on a tip-off, troops launched a cordon and search operation in Adhi area of Mendhar on Tuesday night, sources said. An encounter took place between the terrorists and the troops in which one terrorist was killed.

Code named Abu Arfat, the Lashker-e-Toiba terrorist was reportedly involved in an attack on the Gursai police station on July 16. Terrorists had also attacked the Deputy Superintendent of Police's quarters and police station at Gool area of Udhampur district on the night of July 17.

Troops recovered one AK rifle, three magazines and other ammunition and explosive material from the slain terrorist.
