Over 500 people allegedly attacked a team of policemen, injured seven constables and helped escape of 13 people held by police on criminal charges, officials said on Sunday.

A team of nearly 70 policemen, led by DSP Akhilesh Kumar Sinh, had gone to village Kamkar Wadi in Osmanabad district to arrest a notorious criminal and his gang on Saturday.

Even as the police were leaving the place after arresting 15 people, they were attacked by a mob of about 500 people, comprising relatives and aides of the criminals, with stones and lathis and took away all the 15 criminals arrested.

The police, however, nabbed two of them while 13 managed to escape. Seven policemen who were injured in the incident have been admitted to hospital.
