The city police have decided to launch a drive against vends selling liquor illegally. After the New Year Eve mayhem, the police had implemented the midnight deadline for closing for pubs and bars in the city.
As per the Haryana Excise Act, liquor vends in Gurgaon should down their shutters by midnight. However, there have been reports that liquor vends on state and national highways such as MG Road and NH-8 continue to sell liquor through openings of the closed shutters even after midnight.
“The shutters used by shopkeepers have a small window which they use to sell liquor after the closing time. Now, all liquor vends have been asked to replace such shutters with new ones. Notices have been issued to all police stations to keep a close watch on all liquor vends,” said Maheshwar Dayal, the DCP (east).
The action came after a recent visit of the DCP on Tuesday night to a liquor shop near Grand Mall. The shop was functioning even at 1:30am. Three persons were arrested in the raid.
“Strict action will be taken against the owners of the shop. We can’t allow anyone to hoodwink law,” said Maheshwar Dayal. The police have filed a case under sections 166 and 188 of the Indian Penal Code against the accused.
The arrested salespersons were produced in a city court. The court granted bail to the accused.
