Police working on clues in Aligarh abduction case

india Updated: Jun 24, 2006 17:16 IST

Police are working on some "vital clues" regarding the alleged abduction of a leading cardiologist four days ago, an incident that shocked this town.

Mannan Vasanwala was allegedly kidnapped by unidentified persons on Tuesday night shortly after closing his clinic at the busy market near Medical College Road.

An alert has been sounded by police in western Uttar Pradesh and Vasanwala's white Maruti Zen car has also not been traced so far, officials said on Saturday.

Though there has been no demand for ransom, police suspect it to be a case of "kidnapping for ransom".

The people of Aligarh, especially the business community and the medical fraternity, were shocked by the incident.

Vasanwala's family is receiving support from various quarters, including medical practitioners and staff of the Aligarh Muslim University where his wife Shaista works as a senior teacher at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College.
