THE SPORTS and Youth Welfare Department has approved a policy on maintenance of grounds and stadia owned by it across the State.

According the department sources, the objective of the policy is to keep in good shape the stadia and grounds owned by the Sports Department. Grounds across the State are either owned by the Sports Department or other agencies like civic bodies.

The policy proposes setting up of ‘Khiladi Prashikshak Samitis, which would be given the responsibility to take care of grounds and stadia. At present, there are 17 grounds owned wholly by the Sports Department. The overall annual expenditure on maintenance on these grounds would be around Rs 40 lakh.

The ‘Khiladi Prashikshak Samitis’ will comprise superintendent of police, collector, district sports officer and two national and international players of the districts concerned. The samitis will have to earn revenue for maintenance.

The policy says that the samitis might earn revenue by organising different events, but strictly sports-based and not any political or other event. The expenditure to be borne by the samitis includes housekeeping, renovation, major upgradation and others.

Besides, the Sports Department will give annual grant to the samitis. The department is expecting expenses to the tune of Rs 35 to Rs 40 lakh on the annual grant. The department will give caretaker, guard, sanitation employee and computer operator to each samiti.

The department has started process for recruitment of these employees. Talking to the Hindustan Times, Director Sports Sanjay Chaudhary said that the samitis would be for the developmental work. When asked about Bhopal, he said that department will take the capital’s stadia and grounds directly under its supervision.
