In any tournament, there are bound to be special moments, and that’s what we got from Kieron Pollard on Monday night. We had discussed the possibility of a Pollard explosion in our meetings and that is precisely what transpired during a stiff run chase against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The situation was ideal for Pollard to go out and stamp his authority. Even though Mumbai had wickets in hand, we needed 16 runs an over in the last four overs, and if anyone could pull the fat out of the fire, it was Pollard. To see him explode, first against Thisara Perera and then Amit Mishra, was exhilarating.
Sitting in the dugout, the excitement was palpable. The crowd was right behind the team and Pollard responded brilliantly. When he gets going, he can hit three or four sixes in no time and bring the run rate down dramatically, transferring the pressure on the opposition bowlers, which is what happened.
He has an imposing presence, not just with the cricket bat but also on the field; he is one of those guys you never have to search for on a cricket field!
