Ponting on top among contemporaries

Highlight Story

Enjoying a blazing form, Australian captain Ricky Ponting has touched his best ever Test average of 60.06 to tower above the rest of his contemporaries.

Ponting achieved the coveted mark during the course of his fine 142 off 245 balls in the first innings of the just-concluded Adelaide Test against England.

With this knock, Ponting took his run tally to 9,190 runs in 178 innings and became the first batsman in Test annals to aggregate 7,000 runs with a batting average of 60.00.

Ponting's batting average of 59.99 after his second innings score of 49 is now the best by any batsman currently playing Test cricket and having scored a minimum of 4000 runs.

Before the start of the Ashes, Ponting, with an average of 58.23, was placed at the fifth position among those who have scored 6,000 runs or more.

But with four excellent innings -- 196 and 60 not out at Brisbane and 142 and 49 at Adelaide, he has now moved into the second position behind only the greatest batsman of all time - Don Bradman (99.94).

The top 12, with a minimum of 6,000 runs in Tests, has 5 current batsmen other than Ponting - Rahul Dravid, Mohammad Yousuf, Jacques Kallis, Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara.

Ponting is also the only batsman in the history of Test Cricket to have hit six or more centuries in a calendar year three times -- 7 in 2006 and 6 each in 2003 and 2005. No one else has achieved the distinction even twice.

Ponting's aggregate of 1,249 (ave. 104.08) in just 8 Tests in a calendar year (as on December 5, 2006) has been bettered only by Mohammad Yousuf - 1788 (ave. 99.33) in 11 Tests.
