DeviantArt is a website where you can share your artistic vision with people from all over the world — for free. But with 10 million members and 81 million works of art, there is a lot to wade through.
The Serendipity Approach
If you are just looking for something to breathe some life into a poster or a PowerPoint presentation, try using keywords like “dragonfly” or “spaceship” and see what you get.
Browse through thumbnails till you find something you like. Go to an artist’s ‘gallery’ for a better idea of what’s on offer at Deviant. It is a good idea to add a piece you like to your list of favourites. Since artists frequently link to other artists with similar tastes or themes, checking their favourites works in your favour. If you like specific kinds of art — like digital art, photography, manga — DeviantArt has well-defined categories and is just the place for you.
Put it on the Wall
Some of the pieces on DeviantArt are available as prints. Prices vary enormously. A 24”x36” canvas print can, for example, cost over Rs 13,000 while a photo print of the same picture of the same size will cost roughly Rs 3,000.
Shipping to India will cost extra, and prices will increase depending on the kind of paper and size you want the print on. The smallest are available at approximately Rs 100.
You can also print some images at your local printer, where prices will range from Rs 25 to over Rs 1,000, but unless the image is under a Creative Commons licence, this is of dubious legality. A word of caution: don’t expect high-quality prints.
