Commemorative postage stamps on legendary actresses of Indian cinema Meena Kumari, Devika Rani, Savithiri and Kannan Devi are slated to be released by the postal department in 2009.
In all there will be 47 issues comprising 86 commemorative and special postage stamps, including regular releases like the seasons greetings, a senior postal department official told PTI.
The 'Personality Series' of stamps proposed during the year also includes novelist RK Narayan, poet Pingali Venkaiah, who designed the national flag and veteran Communist leader P Jeevanandam, the official said.
There will also be a set of stamps on Gulmarg, Darjeeling, Udhagamandalam (Ooty) and Simla under the theme 'Colonial Heritage of India'.
A set of commemorative issue featuring the twelve zodiac signs is also in the offing.
The department will also release stamps on popular textiles of the country like Banaras Silk, Kanchipuram Silk, Tant from West Bengal and Chanderi variety from Madhya Pradesh.
Besides, stamps on Maharishi Patanjali and Yoga, villages of Toda Tribals in Nilgiris and Kutch village are to be released.
Architectural splendours of the Ujjanta Palace in Tripura, Patwonki Haveli in Jaisalmer, the House Boats of Kashmir and Kettuvalam Boats of Kerala are also slated for the issue.
Among other themes are the 'Seasons of India', 'Flowering Trees', 'Heritage Temples', 'Preservation of Polar Regions and Glaciers', 'Children Fables Series-I' and 'Endangered Species'.
