Despite turnaround in many fields, particularly in fiscal management, the main challenge before the BJD government today remained poverty, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said.

About 47 per cent of the state's population lived below the poverty line and they required special attention for uplift, Patnaik said adding his government had undertaken several poverty eradication programmes to meet the challenge.

"Poverty is the main challenge before the government...but there has been turnaround in many fields, particularly in fiscal management," Patnaik said on the completion of one year of his government in third succession.

About 47 per cent of the state's population lived below the poverty line and they required special attention for uplift, Patnaik said adding his government had undertaken several poverty eradication programmes to meet the challenge.

Patnaik government faced several hurdles during the year including Maoist menace, multi-crore mining scam and a series of farmer suicide cases.

The BJD government launched poverty eradication programmes like Biju Kandhamal Yojana and Biju Gajapati Yojana during first year of third term as a large number of poor need to be helped in backward districts.

Both the schemes were funded by the state from its own resources, official sources said.

Orissa attracted investment worth Rs 6 lakh crore and registered 9.51 per cent growth during the 10th five-year plan, official sources said.
