Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL), the power distribution utility of Greater Noida, has got residents fuming over a levy of additional security charges.
NPCL has recently imposed the additional security charge ranging between Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 on 19,000 consumers on the basis of their consumption. The residents have been up in arms after they received electricity bills for the month of April in which the additional security charges are included.
On Thursday, some residents wrote a letter to district magistrate, seeking his intervention in the matter. They have also decided to move court.
“NPCL collected Rs 600 from us as security amount at the time of giving connection. The company also charges a fixed meter rent at Rs 130 per month. The additional security is completely uncalled for,” said RC Saxena, a resident of Greater Noida.
“We have given a legal notice to NPCL. Today we have sent a letter to district magistrate too to intervene and solve our problem,” said Saxena.
However, the power company has a different story. NPCL spokesperson S Mohanty told Hindustan Times on Thursday, “At the time of giving new connections years ago we had collected security of Rs 600 on the basis of minimum consumption. Now, consumers have put up additional load by installing air-conditioners, coolers and fridges. Their monthly power bills have gone up and ranged between Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000. In view of this, we have demanded additional security.
“Out of 62,000, additional security has been demanded only from 19,000 consumers as their power consumption is very high,” said Mohanty.
