'PR officers need to keep abreast of changes in IT'

Himachal Pradesh information and public relations minister Mukesh Agnihotri has emphasised that the public relations (PR) professionals needed to keep themselves updated with information technology.

"Officers should set targets for themselves to perform their duties in a better manner," the minister said while presiding over a meeting of PR officers here on Tuesday. He exhorted the PR department to propagate policies and programmes of the state government among people.

He said the department should provide with feedback to help the government frame people-oriented policies. "Sometime misconceptions may arise regarding certain policy and programme of the government, which, if handled professionally, can be cleared," the minister said, adding that PR professionals could play a key role to change people's point of view about government policies.

Agnihotri said department officers should monitor news and views appearing in the media. "The department should provide positive stories to the media."

Underlining the need to formulate a media plan for the proper dissemination of government policies, the minister said coordination among different sections of the department was required to present government in a good light. Besides using modern tools of the media, the department should ensure make the best use of traditional media.

"The song and drama unit of the department should perform in rural areas to educate people regarding government policies," Agnihotri added.
