Senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan underwent a CT scan on Friday as he continued to battle for life six days after being shot at by his brother.

Doctors at PD Hinduja Hospital, where the 56-year-old politician was rushed on Saturday after Pravin Mahajan shot at him from close range in a "fit of rage", said Pramod Mahajan continued to be on ventilator in the intensive care unit.

"A CT scan was done to assess the injury to Pramod Mahajan and also to assess any collection in his body," said Anupam Verma, Director (administration) of PD Hinduja Hospital in central Mumbai.

"The CT scan showed that the injuries are same as were assessed during surgery and managed," Verma told mediapersons outside the hospital.

Describing Pramod Mahajan's condition as critical, the hospital said the politician's requirement of medications to support the blood pressure had gone up marginally since Thursday night.

Earlier, doctors had said his body was responding well to the gradual reduction of medication to maintain blood pressure.

"He is still on ventilation and dialysis support," said Verma, adding that three bullets remain lodged in Pramod Mahajan's body and that they were not of immediate concern to the doctors.

Verma said a team of doctors was closely monitoring Pramod Mahajan's condition and the future course of action would be considered only after all the vital parameters completely stabilised.

In a major breakthrough in the shootout case, which sent shockwaves throughout the country, Pramod Mahajan's wife, Rekha, told the police that she had seen Pravin Mahajan fire the third shot at his elder brother.

The police recorded the statements of Rekha and her son Rahul as part of their investigation into the case on Thursday.

Police sources said Rekha told the investigators that she rushed to the living room from the kitchen after hearing two gunshots.

"When she entered the living room, she saw Pravin Mahajan firing the third shot at his brother," said a source, adding the statement would greatly help the prosecution since Rekha was the only eyewitness in the case.

Pravin Mahajan, 46, will remain in police custody till Saturday.

Police sources say Pravin Mahajan, a builder in the neighbouring Thane district, had made up his mind to kill his brother three weeks ago.

He actively began tracking his elder brother's whereabouts 15 days ago.

In his statement to the police, the accused has said he was not treated well by his "high-profile" brother.

Pravin Mahajan said he was often humiliated and slighted by Pramod Mahajan.

Pravin Mahajan's lawyer maintains his client was suffering from some mental disorder for the last few months and that relations between the two brothers had been cordial.

Pramod Mahajan is among BJP's front-ranking leaders and a party general secretary. In the BJP and outside, he is considered a master strategist and known to enjoy close ties with leaders of almost all parties.
