Saffronart is hosting its biannual online jewellery auction. Bidders from across the globe can log on tosaffronart.com and bid for the jewels of their choice. Registration is free. Minal Vazirani, president and co-founder, says that when they started out, 10 years ago, art wasn’t exactly the most talked about subject in the country.

“Today it has gained momentum. The concept of bidding for jewellery online helps one know if they are acquiring pieces for the right price – it increases transparency,” says Vazirani.

The online jewellery auction had around 700 registered users last time, and this time Vazirani is expecting the numbers to shoot up by at least a 100. So why would anyone want to buy jewellery through a website and not from leading jewellery stores itself? “One of the biggest advantages, in such a scenario, is ready availability among others.

If you place an order for a neckpiece studded with precious stones, if will take the jeweller at least a few months to source the stones. But here they are readily available. Also, the website is auctioning period pieces, that hardly any jeweller can replicate with equal finesse,” says Vazirani.
