There was brief commotion at Madhav Memorial Building in Begumganj block of Raisen district during the commissioning of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the presence of candidates when the machine designated for Ward Number 1 only recorded votes for BJP’s election symbol ‘lotus’ notwithstanding the button one pushed.

There are five candidates in fray from this ward and whichever of the five buttons were pushed by the staff to convince the candidates of the machines’ veracity, the vote went only to the BJP.

A complaint was, later, lodged with the district returning officer about the erratic machine.

The EVM designated for counting of votes for the post of president of municipal council was also found erratic as it did not record votes cast in favour of independent candidate Nanhi Bai Jaat.

When button against her name was pushed, the vote was not recorded. Acting immediately on the complaint, returning officer D K Singh changed both the EVMs. It’s for the first time that EVMs are being used for counting of votes in local bodies’ election in Madhya Pradesh.
