After a delay of more than six months, Amitabh Mattoo has been appointed the first vice-chancellor of Central University (CU) Jammu.
The delay happened because a section of people in Jammu had been demanding that a local educationist be given the position and even launched an agitation to counter Mattoo, who earlier also served as the VC of Jammu University.
The union human resource development ministry held back the appointment and delayed the commissioning of the varsity by one session.
But finally, with President Pratibha Patil approving Mattoo’s appointment, he is expected to join in a week and ensure the appointment of other staff members to start commissioning the university.
Opposing the appointment, National Panthers Party legislator Harsh Dev Singh said, “This is clear that the central government has no concern for the aspirations and sentiments of the people of Jammu.”
Mattoo is at present teaching at the School of International Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University.
It was on July 15, 2007 when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced the setting up of a central university and a management school in the state with, then chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad announcing that the central university would be in Jammu, while the Valley would get the management school.
