National Conference (NC) leader Surjeet Singh Slathia on Sunday said that empowerment of panchayats had opened up vistas of avenues in rural areas.
"Empowering sarpanches and panches to monitor the functioning of various departments in their jurisdiction will go a long way in improving efficiency and making administration result-oriented," Slathia said at the inauguration of a panchayat ghar at Patli Morh. Besides, the former minister inaugurated various civic works in the constituency.
He described the construction of the panchayat ghar and divesting certain powers to public representatives as steps towards capacity-building of democratic institutions at the grass-roots level. Slathia hoped that members of the panchayat raj institutions (PRI) would with sincerity to uplift rural population.
The Smaba legislator said that besides keeping a watch on the functioning of various departments engaged in the implementation of various welfare schemes and undertaking development, the PRIs would monitor the implementation of various flagship schemes such as MGNREGA, Indira Awas Yojana, Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) and National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM).
