A PRISONER managed to give officials the slip at the District Jail and escaped on the concluding day of the Prisoners’ Welfare Function on Tuesday.

Taking advantage of cultural functions that kept officials busy, Sartaj alias Shahrukh, 25, a convict, escaped sometime during the afternoon.

DG Jail RK Diwakar said an inquiry had been ordered in the incident. Besides, police have been informed and a case registered in this regard. However, no disciplinary action has been taken against any security personnel.

Sartaj, a native of Jalaun (Uttar Pradesh), was a murder accused, who was lodged in the Bhopal Central Jail. He was part of jail inmates from all over the State who were brought to the Bhopal District Jail for the Prisoners’ Welfare function.

Much to the embarrassment of the jail department, Sartaj, escaped from the district jail during the cultural events on the final day of the three-day function. He was taking part in the dance troupe of Bhopal’s prisoners and dressed like a woman when he somehow escaped, sources said.

Sartaj, who was serving a lifer, had been in Bhopal Central Jail for the last four years. The Jehangirabad police have registered a case and launched a hunt for the absconding prisoner.
