Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and his deputy Ajit Pawar have a common thread that binds them together – Sharad Pawar. Both revealed this at a function to release Pawar’s biography on Tuesday.
Congressman Chavan said he looked up to the Nationalist Congress Party president and Union minister for his valuable guidance in making policy decisions in the state. Pawar’s nephew Ajit said since his uncle has termed Chavan to be the best choice for the chief minister’s post (in view of last month’s political developments), the new CM should always expect whole-hearted support from his deputy and the NCP.
Chavan and Ajit were speaking after releasing a book ‘Ekmev’ (The one and only) that records Sharad Pawar’s political career span of 45 years. The book, by veteran journalist Madhukar Bhave, which has been published by water resources minister, Sunil Tatkare, has Pawar senior saying that Congress has found the best choice in Chavan to lead the state as CM. “Ajit (Pawar), at times, can be harsh (when speaking) but then he appreciates good things as well,” Pawar says in a marathon interview.
Making a reference to this interview, Ajit said Chavan should not worry. “Saheb (Sharad Pawar) has approved of our partnership because he believes we can together develop the state. And I assure you that I will work with you to make Maharashtra the number one state in the next four years.”
Chavan acknowledged Sharad Pawar’s valuable contribution to the state. “He (Sharad Pawar) tells me how to get more money from the Centre. His contribution, especially when it comes to the support of farmers, will be stand out when the country’s history is written.”
