The plot of the twin rape and murder in Shopian has thickened. Justice Jan Commission probing the case has cast aspersions on the characters of the slain women - Nelofar (23) and Asiya (17), and Shakeel Ahmad Ahangar (Nelofar's husband and Asiya's brother).

At the same time, the Commission has recommended prosecution of the four police officials — SP Javaid Iqbal Matto, DSP Rohit Baskotra, Inspector Shafiq Ahmad and sub-inspector Gazi Abdul Kareem — suspected in the case. The government has placed the four under suspension.

The Commission has recommended interrogation of Ahangar and his friends, suspecting their hand in the "planning and execution" of the rape and killing of the two women.

"It is learnt that he (Ahangar) does not have a good reputation and is known for his immoral activities. More investigation is necessary to look into the possibility of Shakeel and his friends involvement in the incident," the report said.

The Majlis-e-Mushawarat, the representative body spearheading the campaign for identifying and arresting the culprits involved in the case condemned the remarks made about the two women in the report.
