A massive project to ensure proper and hygienically sound drinking water would soon be implemented in Karaikal region, Puducherry chief minister N Rangasamy said on Friday.

A structure with a capacity to store around 55 lakh litres of water would also be constructed at a cost of Rs 5.85
crore in Karaikal and water treatment plant involving an expenditure of Rs 75 lakh would also come up, he said.

The water treatment plant would also form part of the comprehensive scheme evolved by government in the region, he
told PR Siva (AINRC) during question hour in the assembly.

Siva said incidents of renal related ailments were on the rise because of poor quality of drinking water available in Karaikal.

The chief minister told A Anbalagan (AIADMK) that new premises to house the territorial Assembly would be constructed on nearly 1.5 acre near the Puducherry Market committee on ECR road near Puducherry.

He said this site was proposed to be used earlier during his (Rangasamy`s) tenure as Congress chief minister for
construction of assembly complex and the initiative would be revived now.

Anbalagan complained there was intervention by some politically strong groups who were standing in the way of
government acquiring the site and it should be overcome with firm hand.

"We will take appropriate decision to have the building on the site we have proposed earlier," Rangasamy said.
