Protest over removal of Gandhi statue in Rourkela

india Updated: Jul 03, 2010 14:29 IST

Prominent citizens of Rourkela and several parties have expressed resentment over the removal of the statue of 'Father of Nation' Mahatma Gandhi at the busy Panposh chowk of the steel city by the administration for widening of road.

The statue installed during 1949 by former minister, Pabitra Mohan Pradhan, was bulldozed yesterday by the district administration alongwith other makeshift shops and houses constructed in an unauthorised manner as prominent citizens said it amounted to causing dishonour to 'Bapu'.

Former Congress MLA Prabhat Mohapatra has written to the district collector protesting against the "act of disrespect" and demanded re-installation of the statue at its previous spot and apologies by the local administration to the citizens of Rourkela.

The local BJP has also condemned the incident and demanded an investigation into the matter and proper action against the "erring officials".
