Protests in Assam over fuel price hike

Several organisations and political parties in Assam were protesting against Centre's decision to hike prices of fuel.

The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has burnt the effigy of Union Petroleum minister Murli Deora in protest against the group of ministers decision to de-control fuel prices.

The state wing of the All India Road Transport Workers Federation have called for a 24-hour "chakka bandh" agitation and a general strike on June 29 and appealed to the operators of all private and public sector vehicles to keep off the road.

The state wing of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has extended full support to the strike call by the transport workers.

Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) said it would protest against the hike by holding district level dharnas tomorrow.

Members of the state unit of the BJP and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad also burnt the effigy of Deora while the CPI (M) staged a procession.

In an unique protest, BJP's Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan took out a protest rally in a bullock cart with empty LPG cyclinders tied to it.
