The main accused in the gang rape of a 25-year-old woman at the information technology hub of Hinjewadi on Thursday was arrested early on Saturday morning.

Subhash Hiralal Bhosale (28) was allegedly driving the Tata Indica in which the victim was driven around for at least eight hours and raped by him and his two accomplices. The other two accused, Ganesh Kamble (25) and Ranjit Gade (25), were arrested on Friday, but Bhosale had been absconding.

He was picked up from Hotel Sheetal near Dehu Road on the old Mumbai-Pune highway at 1.30 am on Saturday. “Police had laid traps at various places Bhosale was expected to visit and he was nabbed from one of those places,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mahesh Patil, told Hindustan Times.

The victim, a native of Nagpur who had returned from the US where her husband works, was on her way to Bhandarkar Road. The accused saw her waiting and offered her a lift. She accepted thinking it was a shared taxi.

The three men threatened her with a knife, consumed alcohol and took her to Hinjewadi where they allegedly raped her.

Bhosale was produced before a local court on Saturday and remanded in police custody for five days. He owned the car used in the crime.

He had escaped from his village after he learnt that his accomplices had been arrested. Five police teams and a network of informers were tracking his movements.

Bhosale, who has several cases registered against him, used to ferry passengers from Hinjewadi to destinations in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
