Nilesh Chougale, 30, the thief from Pune arrested last week by the Kurar police has spent almost half his life in jail, said police inspector S Marathe.
He said Chougale has been a thief for 21 years and would return to crime as soon as he would step out of jail. Chougale made so much money, said Marathe, that he bought an apartment in Pune where he stayed with his wife and children.
“He has been arrested so many times, he now knows all the laws and court procedures. He is a habitual offender; counselling hasn’t helped,” said Marathe.
On hearing of his arrest, police stations across the city have asked for details as they believe he could be involved in thefts in their jurisdiction. These include the Andheri, DN Nagar, Versova, Malad, Borivli, Samta Nagar, Dadar, Worli and Azad Maidan police stations.
