Punjab managed to hold on to a draw against Orissa in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium here on Friday.

Reaching the target of 348 to win on the last day was out of the question.

Punjab did well in the end to see off the day with six wickets intact.

Earlier, Orissa wicketkeeper Haladhar Das and Basanta Mohanty stitched together an unbroken partnership of 74 for the ninth wicket to get their team into a strong position.

In reply, Punjab skipper Pankaj Dharmani and Kaul showed a lot of patience to ensure that they got at least one point. Kaul was unbeaten on 73 runs of 177 balls and blocked one end.

Dharmani got out for 40 when the team was almost out of danger and after him, Vishwas Bhalla remained unbeaten on 24. Punjab’s next match is against Railways in Delhi.

Brief Scores: Orissa 283 & 247 drew with Punjab 177 & 192-4 (U Kaul 73; D Mohanty 2-39).
