A moneylender in the Philippines, who hailed from Punjab, has been shot dead by unidentified persons in Manila when he was collecting money, his family said on Tuesday.

Paramjit Singh, 21, who was in the business of money lending after going to Manila two years back, was shot dead by unidentified persons.

"We received a call today from Manila that my nephew Paramjit Singh has been shot dead," Jasbir Singh, his maternal uncle said.

A pall of gloom spread over his residence at Raj Nagar locality of the city as soon as the news came in.

The friends of Paramjit informed that he had gone to the city market to collect money from a client when two men shot him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed on his way, they said.

The body of Paramjit would be flown back on Friday for cremation, he said.

There have been attacks on moneylenders from the state in the Philippines.
