Efforts to cobble together a Third Front can be scorned at, but hardly be wished away. Most pre-poll surveys indicate that regional parties and smaller groups are likely to win approximately 40% seats in the next Lok Sabha.
Tuesday’s joint declaration adopted by leaders of 11 non-Congress, non-BJP parties to work jointly to defeat the Congress and BJP in the coming general elections appears like a move to prevent poaching from the camp in this season of political joint ventures and mergers.
The Left-sponsored Front comprises political leaders with disparate interests, several of whom also harbour Prime Ministerial ambitions. Several parties in the group have done business with the BJP in the past.
This combine also represents the plurality and diversity of Indian polity and society.
