Ten people, nine of them children, were feared drowned on Friday after a boat capsized in the river Ganga at Raalpur Ghat in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli district.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi, an MP from the constituency, visited the area to console families whose loved ones were either dead or missing and assured help.

All 18 people on the boat lived in Kanjas village near Rae Bareli. The mishap occurred at around 2am when some of the passengers tried to row the boat themselves.

One of the oars broke and the vessel keeled over. Six passengers and the two boatmen swam to safety, police said.

The bodies of Shilpi, 20, Suraj, 15 and Raunak, 10, have been recovered, authorities said, while seven children were missing when reports last came in.

Uttar Pradesh science and technology minister Manoj Kumar Pande visited Kanjas village and assured assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those killed.

The family members of the victims alleged that the district administration had shown laxity in looking for the missing children.
