It was known in Indian cricketing circles for the last two days. But it was officially announced on Sunday. Sachin Tendulkar will make his ODI appearance during the tri-series in Australia starting February 5, while youngster Ajinkya Rahane will have to wait for his turn.

Barring India’s victorious World Cup campaign last year, Tendulkar has featured in only two ODIs in a bilateral series since his epic unbeaten 200 against South Africa on February 24, 2010.

Once Tendulkar made himself available, it was clear that despite the selectors deciding to name a 17-member squad, as reported by HT on Sunday, either Rahane or Manoj Tiwary would miss out on vital exposure in Australia.

And, it didn’t come as a surprise when the selectors, at a meeting in Chennai on Sunday, gave Tiwary the nod “for his hundred in the ODI against the West Indies in Chennai on Dec 11, and keeping in mind India’s fragile middle order”.

Rahane, one of the contenders for his batting prowess, was blooded in the limited overs squad during India’s disastrous series in England. Despite his impressive outings in England and despite being a part of the Indian squad for all formats for a better part of the last four months, he has featured in only one game.http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/HTEditImages/Images/16-01-12-metro16e.jpg

It was learnt that the batsman has been “taken into confidence” and the selectors have told him he is in their plans.
