'Rahul behaved like a joker after minister hurt in melee'

india Updated: Jan 14, 2014 19:47 IST

Rahul Gandhi behaved like a “joker” during his visit to Kerala and action should be taken against him for travelling on top of a police jeep, a CPI-M leader Pinarayi Vijayan said on Tuesday.

Communist Party of India-Marxist state leader Vijayan said: "His candidature as the Congress's PM candidate is more or less finalised and yesterday (Monday) travelling on top of a police jeep on his state visit he behaved like a joker."

When newsmen said why can't his act be seen as a humility on his part, Vijayan shot back saying: "He is one person who is given the highest security and in the melee, a central minister (minister of state for labour Kodikunnil Suresh) got injured."

Suresh suffered severe injuries after he was trampled on by party workers as they scampered to greet Gandhi. More chaos followed as the car Gandhi was travelling in ran out of fuel and his motorcade had to be stopped at a petrol pump to refuel the car.

However, Kerala government chief whip PC George said he was impressed by Rahul Gandhi's behaviour.

"He belongs to the Nehru-Gandhi clan and I never thought he could just walk into the hearts of the average common man, like what he did yesterday," George said.

"He has proved that his heart is there and he was able to connect with the man on the street," George said, adding that Gandhi's visit has given a great impetus to the youth in the state.
