When was the first time you fell in love?
I had my first crush when I was in the second grade. Then, I thought I’d fallen seriously in love in standard eight. Then I got into a relationship in college. So, I took quite a while to realise the meaning of love.
Are you in touch with your first crush?
Yes, on and off I bump into her. Our paths did cross, but I am not in constant touch with her.
What would the world be without romance?
It would be devoid of fun. Romance is everywhere. Romance is in sensitivity, it’s in wine, it’s in the movie Notting Hill, it’s in the season of winter, it’s in Paris. According to me, romance is a blend of spontaneity, sensuousness and imagination.
And what are your thoughts on love?
Love is the only thing worth living your life for. For me, it’s very fundamental. You see those who commit suicide. Most of them do because they consciously or subconsciously feel that there’s no love left for them in the world.
Do you believe in marriage at all?
I don’t believe in marriage. But I don’t stop others from believing in it. I’m not against it.
You’re 39. Don’t you miss children?
Yes, I love kids. But just because you want to have children doesn’t mean you should get married. I can adopt a child if I want.
The media relates to you for your honest opinions, but will we ever see you getting elusive, perhaps as elusive as your Takshak co-star Ajay Devgan?
I’m too old to change now. As for my opinions, I’ve the right to air them whenever I want to. I’ve been like this all my life. Even in school, I was either the teacher’s favourite or I was chucked out of class.
You supported the gay right movement recently with Vikram Seth and Arundhati Roy. Is the cause dear to you because you’ve done films and plays on homosexuality?
I’m against discrimination of any kind, except those of intellect. Qualities that make men good and bad. If a democracy doesn’t give you equal rights, then it has no meaning. It may take years to eradicate prejudices. We shouldn’t lose patience.
