CONGRESS MP from Amethi Rahul Gandhi launched the election campaign in Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency for his mother, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, on Tuesday.

He made public contact in 19 villages, covering the entire Dal Mau assembly segment as well as part of Satao assembly segment. From Manehru to Kathgar, he received enthusiastic response from the people.

Clad in a white kurta-pajama, he reached the first contact place Manehru, accompanied by former union minister Captain Satish Sharma and Manoj Mattu. He was welcomed here with slogans of ‘Sonia Gandhi Zindabad’ and ‘Rahul Gandhi Zindabad’.

Speaking on the occasion, Captain Satish Sharma assured the gathering that with Sonia representing Rae Bareli, development would continue. Rahul, in his brief speech, recalled his family’s old association with Rae Bareli and reiterated that development was the main issue.

On the way, Rahul had a chat with the press at Deen Shah Gora. Replying to queries regarding opposition allegations about Sonia’s foreign origin and that Sonia had imposed this by-election on the people of Rae Bareli, Rahul said he would rather talk about development.

When asked whether he would lead the Congress campaign in UP in the forthcoming assembly elections, Rahul said he would abide by the party leaders’ directives. He refused to comment on the state government and said he would concentrate on the development of this area.

The villages he visited included Manehru, Bela Tekai, Alawalpur, Khajuri, Deen Shah Gora, Jalalpur Ghai, Gori Payagpur, Rasoolpur, Dharao, Rampur Barara, Barara Bujurg, Deenganj, Khaleelpur, Khadharpur, Raahimada, Radha Balampur, Jagatpur, Bardara, Balipur and Kathagar.
