Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi's surprise visit to Lakhimpur on Wednesday to meet the family of the teenage girl who was recently raped and murdered, drew criticism from the Bahujan Samaj Party.
The girl was found dead on the Nighasan police station premises in Lakhimpur Kheri on June 10.
Gandhi spent over an hour with the girl's parents at their home. Accompanied by party spokesperson Akhilesh Pratap Singh and district president Iqbal Ahmad, he also visited the spot where the body was found.
Gandhi was shocked to learn that even 17 days after the murder, the family had not received a copy of the FIR, Ahmad said. On his insistence, the Nighasan police provided a copy.
Gandhi said: "This woman would not get justice here and has demanded a CBI probe into her daughter's murder."
Calling the visit "politically motivated", a BSP spokesman later said Gandhi should concentrate instead on the plight of people in Congress-ruled states in the country.
