The Special Protection Group (SPG) has been asked to explain whether it violated the motor vehicles act when the Congress leader sat atop one of its vehicle during a road show in Gwalior on April 10.

The notice seeking the explanation was sent to the assistant inspector general of the SPG, the agency entrusted with Gandhi's security, by Gwalior superintendent of police. The group will have to pay Rs 100 as fine if found guilty of the violation.

Congress candidate Ashok Singh, for whom Gandhi was campaigning, was also sitting atop the vehicle with the Congress vice-president. The SPG has not replied to the notice yet.

Bharatiya Janata Party's Awdhesh Singh Tomar had complained about the violation to the district administration. The police examined the matter and sent a notice to the SPG on April 15.

The Gwalior police have also sought to know if the transport authority concerned had been informed about the modification carried out in the vehicle used by Gandhi, as mandated by the motor vehicle act.
