AS RAHUL Gandhi launches the election campaign in Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency tomorrow, he will have a two-tier election team in tow to ensure that his mother’s adversaries bite dust in Rae Bareli, where voting will take place on May 8.

A comprehensive campaign programme has been worked out with indications that Priyanka Gandhi Vadera too will campaign there. Rahul has already reached there to launch the campaign and camp in the constituency while Sonia will pay a brief visit to each of the five assembly segments.

The Congress proposes to contest the by-poll on the pattern of ‘village panchayat’ elections to ensure a high margin of victory for Sonia. The victory becomes challenging for the Congress with Sonia’s rivals Vinay Katiyar (BJP), Prabha Singh (Apna Dal) and Raj Kumar Chaudhary (Samajwadi Party) already launching their onslaught against their high profile opponent.

Besides Sonia’s contribution to the development of Rae Bareli and her role in national politics, the Congress will also focus its campaign on traditional ties of the Gandhi family with the people of the constituency. Rahul has appointed his key aides working in Amethi to manage the five assembly constituencies that do not have Congress MLAs. Those appointed in-charge of assembly segments include Manoj Muttu (Rae Bareli-Sadar), Kanishka Singh (Sairaini), Ram Krishna (Bachhrawan), GS Jamwal (Dalmau) and Deshmukh (Sataon).  They will work in cooperation with senior Congress leaders, who may include former legislators.

There will also be sector in-charge with each heading two Nyay Panchayats, 128 Nyay Panchayat in-charge and the booth in-charge in addition to District Congress Committees, City Congress Committees, Block Congress Committees and the Village Congress Committees set up in the constituency.

That the Congress will focus its election campaign on traditional ties of the Gandhi family with the people of Rae Bareli is evident from party’s posters prepared for Sonia’s campaign. A collage carrying photographs of Sonia’s marriage with Rajiv Gandhi, late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi has been brought out with slogans of “Rae Bareli ka haath, Soniaji ke saath” and “aapke liye seva hi taj hai, hamain aap par naaj hai.” The poster also shows Sonia with Rahul, Priyanka and Robert Vadera at the time of filing nomination papers. Another poster shows Sonia mingling with the people of the constituency accepting their petitions.

It reads “Tyag tapasya aur kshama dan, Soniaji ki yahi pehchan” while another proclaims, “Rishta bada purana hai, bahu ko bhari maton se jitana jai”. It has the photographs of late Firoj Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi printed on it. A hoarding challenging Sonia’s adversaries (‘Rae Bareli ki lalkar, jawab dene ko taiyar) has also been sent to the constituency.
