On a day the teen girl set afire by the father of her alleged rapist died in Raisen district, a similar case was reported from Bhind. In Guna district, yet another girl set herself on fire to escape continuous harassment by her neighbour.
The 15-year-old in Raisen, who had been admitted in Bhopal’s Hamidia hospital on Saturday, died on Monday morning.
The police had initially filed a case of molestation. A rape case was filed only after she was medically examined.
Kanchhedi Lal, father of Ashok Silavat — who had allegedly raped the girl on Thursday — had barged into the house and set her afire after she had mustered courage and reported the matter to the police. Both father and son are currently in judicial custody.
A 16-year-old, meanwhile, was admitted to a hospital in Gwalior with 70% burn injuries.
The girl, a resident of a village in Bhind, was alone at home on Monday when a local youth, Bunty Bhadoria, barged in and assaulted her. When she managed to fight him off, he poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
Bhadoria, who is on the run, has been booked for molestation and attempt to murder.
In Guna district, a 17-year-old girl set herself afire on Saturday following alleged harassment by a local. The girl, who had sustained serious burns, has been admitted to the district hospital.
Bharat Sehariya had been harassing the girl for the last three years, said the victim’s father.
He said earlier, he had lodged a complaint with the police, but no action was taken. On Saturday, the man targeted her again, after which she attempted suicide.
The police, however, denied the incidents of harassment.
“The girl’s family did not register any complaint. According to the victim’s statement, she had set herself ablaze after her mother scolded her,” said KC Jain, superintendent of police, Guna.
