RAJA, THE 20-year-old lion at the Van Vihar National Park died on Thursday morning. The lion was the oldest in a pride of big cats that had been rescued from the Rajmahal Circus in Korba some months ago.

“Preliminary investigations into the death suggest the lion might have died of some lung infection,’’ Van Vihar Director Jasbeer Singh Chauhan told Hindustan Times. He added the animal’s viscera would be sent for detailed investigations to ascertain the exact cause of death.

The lion died at about 10 am and this is the first death of an animal placed in the national parks’ rescue centre, Chauhan said. “That has made the detailed viscera examination crucial, as we will be able to find out if there is some infection that could affect other inhabitants of the rescue centre too,’’ Chauhan emphasised.
