The Rajasthan police arrested a bookie in Ajmer around 12.45am on Thursday and seized sheets of paper on which he had allegedly accepted bets worth Rs 5 lakh on the T20 league eliminator match between the Rajasthan Royals and the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The match, which the Royals won, had ended less than two hours earlier.

Ganj police station officials identified the arrested bookie as Om Prakash Garg. “We are investigating the case and are hopeful this will lead us to bigger bookies,” inspector Chetna Bhati, station house officer of Ganj police station said.

During the raid on Garg’s house in the Patti Katla area of the town, 135km southwest of Rajasthan capital Jaipur, the police also recovered sheets of paper on which the bookie had received bets worth Rs 6 lakh on an earlier match between the Bangalore and Kolkata teams.

Amit and Gullu Bhai were two names that were legible among the dozen-odd people whose bets had been noted on scraps of paper by Garg for the Royals versus Sunrisers match.

According to police sources, Garg, 52, is a notorious bookie, but a relatively small fry. The police had questioned him during the last season of the T20 league.

A spot-fixing scandal in the current season of the domestic T20 league has triggered a nationwide investigation into cricket betting.
