Actor Rajinikanth welcomed his neighbour in Poes Garden on Sunday and sent AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa advance Diwali greetings.
In a letter to Jayalalithaa, copies of which were released by AIADMK, Rajinikanth said “I am very glad to have you back in Poes Garden. Praying for good times for you. Always wishing you well for good health and peace.”
Rajinikanth’s good neighbourly bonhomie comes at a time when the local BJP unit was trying its best to rope him in to strengthen the national party.
Given Rajinikanth’s following and goodwill, the BJP feels that his joining would propel the party into becoming a much more potent political force in the state where its presence has been marginal so far.
Rajinikanth, whom Prime Minister Modi called on when campaigning in Tamil Nadu for general elections, had studiously kept away from politics. The BJP had used Rajinikanth-Modi meeting to good effect in campaigning for general elections.
Local BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu make no secret of their longing to have Rajinikanth join the party.
Union minister for child and women welfare Maneka Gandhi also inquired the well being of Jayalalithaa and sent a letter to her. Gandhi said, “I am sure this time will be over soon and we will see you formally back at the helm of administration again.”
Jayalalithaa was released on Saturday after Supreme Court granted her conditional bail on medical grounds.
