Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice in the pre-lunch session on Friday amid furore created by members making persistent demands to raise a variety of issues.
Congress MP Rashid Alvi and Trinamool Congress MP Dinesh Trivedi made forceful appeals to raise the Gujarat mass graves and Singur issues respectively. However, deputy chairman K Rahman Khan denied permission saying that the issues could be taken up only during Zero Hour. The din that ensued led to the house being adjourned. It reassembled 15 minutes later but the unrelenting members demanded to know the fate of their Zero Hour notices. The commotion that followed led to the House being adjourned again.
Earlier, no sooner had deputy chairman K Rahman Khan asked Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachauri to read out government business for next week than BJP leader Sushma Swaraj demanded to know the fate of the Women’s Reservation Bill.
Women MPs cutting across party lines joined the chorus and asked whether the Bill would be introduced during the current session. Though Pachauri said that the government was committed to bringing the Bill as early as possible, the MPs insisted on knowing the time frame in which it would be introduced. The minister said that there was a procedure to be followed before a Bill is introduced and the government was doing just that.
