Interviewing Rakhi Sawant sure seemed like a cakewalk on Kof fee with Karan. But her haal-chaal with HT Café turned out to be an emotional roller coaster ride as Rakhi launched a tirade against the media while bawling on the other end of the telephone line. Wait, there's more! We managed to do what Karan couldn't - get threatened by her boyfriend.
Rakhi has come a long way from juggling the item-girl and controversy-queen tags to becoming a household name with Bigg Boss. She's even hosted a TV show and cut her own album this year.
An interview on her journey from childhood to the present is all we wanted. But the word childhood struck quite the wrong chord. "I don't want to talk about my past. Mujhe in baaton se bahut takleef hoti hai. No one realises how much pain is hidden behind my smile…ki main kis aag se guzar ke nikli hoon," she says. Our persistence begun to annoy boyfriend Abhishek who replaces Rakhi on the line and informs us that a probe into the past will end the interview.
We ended up eliciting only nuggets of information about her past (she was reticent as a child, was offered her first item number by Suneel Darshan at age 13, which she refused, and she changed her name from Neeru to Rakhi).
We move on to happier topics. Can she quote her price now?
"After Bigg Boss, I can. People love me and now I am doing films where I play the lead," she says, adding, "Well I can't really remember the film's names, one is Shashi Ranjan's film and Rahul Rawail's Buddha Mil Gaya is ready for release."
Will she continue to do item numbers? "Yes, of course. What's wrong with it? Some leading actors have performed such numbers," she retorts hastily.
Baby don't cry
It seems that on the work front Rakhi is happy. But she steps in to correct our misconception, "I can't be happy if I want to because the media won't let me be. They keep propagating a tacky image of mine. They even make my charity work look like a publicity stunt." By now she is wailing like a baby. We try to distract her with . other questions but it's too late.
It's politician RR Patil who falls under the sledgehammer. He was instrumental in banning her shows in Maharashtra. "I've been called kachchra queen...Why am I not allowed to perform in Maharashtra?" goes the course of the tirade. Rakhi passes the buck to Shani and Mangal. Who are they, you ask? Well, the two feature in her horoscope and she holds them responsible for all controversies about her.
After a ten-minute trauma drama Rakhi gives us something. "I will be hosting a talk show on the lines of Koffee With Karan for a new Zee channel called Zee Net. It's Shashi Ranjan's show and shooting starts next month," she says and signs off with a super-filmi remark, "Mera ek, ek aansu aapke interview main dikhna chahiye."
Sure Rakhi. You've given us nothing else to write about.
