A 12-year-old girl from Ranchi has accused her divorced mother's alleged lover of sexual harassment.
The child met the chief justice of Jharkhand, R Banumathi, in the high court in Ranchi on Monday and handed her a note with the complaint.
She said accused Nitin Karki, who claims to be a marine engineer from Dehradun, had befriended her mother on social networking website Facebook.
Around a fortnight ago, Karki visited her mother, who stays at her parents' house in Ranchi along with the child since divorcing her Kolkata-based husband a few years ago.
Karki began staying with the family and allegedly made indecent advances towards the girl, who is a Class-5 student at a reputed city school.
"He always tried to touch me and I did not like the way he looked at me," the child said in her written complaint.
She added that Karki also forced her to pose for photographs.
Following her complaint, the chief justice directed the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA) to take immediate action in the case and asked the Ranchi police superintendent to nab the accused.
Police personnel have also been deployed at the child's residence since Monday night, while JHALSA has asked the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) to intervene.
Deputy superintendent of police Nisha Murmu said an FIR needed to be lodged before police could arrest the accused.
But Ranchi district CWC chairman Om Prakash Singh said, "We will not wait for the family to lodge the FIR. In case nobody turns up, CWC itself will lodge the FIR."
The child's grandparents will appear before the CWC on Wednesday.
Singh said he had asked the CWC district protection officer to visit the child's house and record her statement.
"We will do our best for the girl," he said.
