The sleepy village of Kukthala, around 25 km from Agra, is yet to recover from the shock of the rape and murder of a six-month-old girl.
The baby daughter of villager Roop Singh went missing while his wife was cooking food for a visitor on Monday evening. The visitor, a 22-year-old man called Lohre — an acquaintance of Roop Singh — was missing too.
The villagers complained to the police, but the in-charge of police outpost of Kukthala, Shyam Singh, refused to take action.
In the early hours of Tuesday, the body of the baby was found in the fields. She had been gagged and raped. Postmortem confirmed sexual assault and death from asphyxiation.
The angry villagers took on the police. A group of woman attacked the police party and demanded suspension of Shyam Singh. A sub inspector and a constable at the outpost was subsequently suspended, but the police are yet to zero-in on the accused.
‘It is possible that the accused is hiding somewhere in Agra city. He had recently been living in Jagishpura in the city,” said Rajeev Yadav, station house officer of Acchnera.
Meanwhile, in Goa, a 22-year-old labourer was arrested on Wednesday for the rape and murder of a four-year-old girl.
The child, a resident of Mumbai, had come to stay with relatives in Quepem, south Goa. She had gone missing on Sunday.
Sima Moti’s body was found wrapped in a plastic bag and buried under sand piled in the elevator duct space of an under-construction building.
“He lured the girl with an offer of giving her a chocolate and took her to the building nearby,” said inspector Santosh Desai.
The accused confessed to killing the girl after raping her as he feared she would tell her grandparents, he added.
