A new store opened last week offers scuba diving equipment to Mumbaikars. Claiming to be the first of its kind in India, The Dive Store offers the entire gamut of wetsuits, masks, fins, snorkels, regulators, BC jackets, dive computers and cameras, and other allied gear essential for the sport.

They stock popular brands Scubapro, Aqualung and TUSA. Owned by veteran ad-man Prahlad Kakkar, the store is situated in Bandra. Kakkar explains, “I run a scuba diving school named Lacadives in Lakshadweep and most of my clients are a close bunch. They all wanted to buy their own equipment before reaching Lakshadweep. So, I decided to open a store, right here in Mumbai.”

He also busts a popular myth and says that in order to scuba dive, it isn’t necessary to be a perfect swimmer. “Swimming is about floating on water, whereas scuba diving is about sinking and staying underwater,” Kakkar states.

Not expensive
Prices at The Dive Store average at Rs 3,000. Kakkar does not think it’s an expensive sport for the common man. “Well, this is Mumbai. Everyone can afford it if they want”, he says.

The Dive Store also has plans of setting up shop in Delhi, Bengaluru, Cochin and Chennai. “It’s not just a store,” Kakkar insists. “It’s a place to hang out. It’s a quaint little bungalow with a garden.” The store is also home to Reef Watch Marine Conservation, an NGO that creates awareness about marine ecology and conservation.

The store’s retail equipment sales and pool training sessions are conducted by the Life Aquatic with Lacadives, a lifestyle company. They also conduct pool trainings, and dive trips to destinations across the globe.
